Because even though it's winter here it's summer in Australia so let’s warm up with an Australian themed wine tasting dinner.
Unencumbered by the restrictive rules and regulations that most wine regions must abide by, winemakers in Australia are free to employ cutting-edge techniques and seek out terroirs perfectly suited to particular grape varieties. The result is one of the most diverse wine scenes in the world. Quite simply, there’s nothing like it - over 100 different grape varieties grown across 65 wine regions. From rogue to refined, classic to contemporary, it’s variety with more variety!
While Australia may be best known for its Shiraz, the country offers many varietals and blends. Wine grapes grown in the country range from cool weather grapes such as Riesling and Pinot Noir to grapes that thrive in warm, dry climates such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Winemakers are doing many exciting things in Australia, creating New World wines with big, bold, juicy flavors. Many of these ripe, spicy wines have deeply concentrated flavors that excite the palate.
Big, bold flavors characterize many of Australia's finest wines, while others have more subtle Old World finesse that comes from traditional winemaking processes. Winemakers in Australia also make excellent fortified and sweet wines (called stickies), as well as delicious sparkling wines.
